What should go in a go-bag?

Start with water, snacks, a change of clothes, phone chargers, copies of IDs, a small first-aid kit, and any daily medications. Add pet food and baby supplies if you need them.

How much emergency water should a family store?

Plan on one gallon per person per day, for at least three days. A family of four needs at least 12 gallons.

What do you do with my answers?

We don't have kids. Is READY! still useful?

Yes. Kids at school is just one area. Evacuation, home safety, food and supplies, staying in touch, and health apply to every household, including couples and people caring for aging parents.

Where does the local risk information come from?

Local risk flags are based on public hazard data, such as FEMA's National Risk Index, matched to your county.

About us

A small-town dad with a pager on his belt, and a risk company to run.

READY! started with one person who spent his life between two worlds that rarely meet.

David Astor was a strange mix. In his small town he coached Little League, served on the school board, and, for years, the volunteer firefighter and EMT who answered the pager in the middle of the night.

By day he ran a successful technology company focused on risk compliance and operational stability. His job was helping organizations find their weak spots before those spots became emergencies, and keep running when things went wrong anyway.

Those two worlds taught him the same lesson from opposite directions. On calls, he saw what happens when a family isn't ready: the frantic search for a medication list, the kids nobody could reach, the house without a working smoke alarm. At work, he saw how much calmer everything gets when a risk is named, planned for, and practiced.

Big companies have risk teams, continuity plans, and drills. Families have a junk drawer and good intentions. READY! is David's answer to that gap: the same clear, practical thinking that keeps organizations running, made simple, friendly, and personal for the people you love.

A response to a feeling a lot of people share right now.

Lately, many of us feel it: a low hum of helplessness. Fires and floods on the news, empty shelves, outbreaks, scams, and the sense that the ground keeps shifting with little an ordinary family can do about it.

Part of that feeling is honest. Most of us no longer have the hard skills our grandparents took for granted. Few of us know how to store water, keep a pantry for a rough winter, or get a family out of the house in the dark. That isn't a personal failing. Life changed. But it does mean a lot of good, capable people need guidance and a little help.

We don't want you living in fear.

Fear is exhausting, and it doesn't get anyone ready. Mostly it sells gear that ends up in the garage. We think families deserve something better: a calm, clear path from worry to a plan they can actually live with.
